Phnom Penh Travel Guide

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia, located in the south west of the country on the Tonle Sap River - one tributary of Mekong River. Used to be known as “Asian Pearl” in 1920, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are the most attractive cities to tourists when visiting Cambodia. Come and find ticket to discover this ideal destination.

Where to go?

1. Royal Palace

The Royal family doesn’t live here anymore, but there are some good temples and architecture around. You’ll find information about the history of the royal family, interesting temples, and an amazing courtyard. It’s not as luxurious as the palace in Bangkok but worth the $6 USD admission fee.

2. Independence Monument

Located on the nerve of the city at the intersection of Norodom and Sihanouk Ville boulevards, the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh is built in 1958 to mark Cambodian Independence day after winning back the freedom for French protectorate on November 9th, 1953.

This is also chosen as the National day of Cambodia. Nowadays, it serve as cenotaph to Cambodia’s war dead. The monument is designed by Cambodian architect “Vann Molyvann following architecture of ancient Angkorian style. The 20-meter-high tower looks like a “stupa” with the top part mimicking the shape of lotus. It’s not allowed to walk inside this monument but the surrounding part quite impressive with large parks and fountains. At night, the red, blue and white colors from floodlights are turned on to show the color on the flag of Cambodia.

3. Wat Phnom

This is the tallest religious structure in the city and also the highest point of Phnom Penh city centre. This temple is constructed by a wealthy wisdom named Penh who found 4 bronze statue of Buddhist in a tree trunk as the sacred place for 4 statues. On the entrance way, there is statue of Snake God – Naga and 2 mascot animal. Right on the top off the hill is temple complex, behind is an altar of Penh wisdom. Near her statue is a God of wealth statue. The next outstanding part is white stupa where storing the skeleton of King Ponhea Yat.

Some Tips for accessibility and transportation

From Vietnam, you can go on boat to travel to Phnom Penh from Chau Doc city, Vietnam or take Bus to Phnom Penh through Moc Bai/Bavet border gate. By airway is available to Phnom Penh international airport.

When to go?

Almost all season be used to to reach it year round but be aware of hot weather from March to August.
